I’m a wife, a mom to a teenager (please pray for me!), and a pharmacist. I love helping people with their health!
I received my Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. After pharmacy school, I completed a residency in Downers Grove, Illinois.
I have always been fascinated with how our body works…how it keeps us healthy and how it breaks down when disease strikes. I became a pharmacist because I wanted to help people be healthy, but I soon realized that our current healthcare system would rather put a “band-aid” on our symptoms instead of treating the real cause of the problem.
I suffered from debilitating fatigue in my early 30s. Here I was…a mom to a toddler, a wife, and a full-time pharmacist, and I could barely function. Motherhood was a chore. My relationship with my husband was on the brink of divorce. I struggled to keep up at work. I could not lose weight. And yet my doctor kept telling me that there was nothing wrong with me. “Then why do I feel so awful?”, I asked my doctor one day. She looked at me blankly and said “I don’t know.”
That’s when I decided to take my health into my own hands. I knew there was something wrong with me, and it was obvious that our current medical system did not have the answers I desperately needed. So I started looking to other areas of medicine. After a lot of research and several visits to different types of practitioners, I found answers in functional and holistic medicine. The focus of functional and holistic medicine is to find the root cause and use natural ways to treat it. I was shocked to learn that I had hormone imbalance issues – at the age of 31! – along with an autoimmune condition, gut health issues, and adrenal fatigue. In other words, I was a hot mess.
I found out that toxins, stress, and my 15-year use of the birth control pill were playing a major role in my health issues. So I started taking a long, hard look at my life and how it was affecting my health. I chose to start living more holistically. I ditched the birth control pill for more natural ways to balance my hormones, ate more whole foods, and switched to non-toxic cleaners and personal care products. I also began implementing a daily routine grounded in spiritual practices, meditation, and yoga to lower my stress level. Above all else, I learned the importance of putting myself first instead of dead last on my priority list.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I find myself having coffee with friends of similar age who are also struggling. They don’t feel like themselves. They are putting on weight. They feel like they are riding an emotional roller coaster. They don’t sleep well. And all of this is affecting their relationships with their significant others, their kids, and their performance at work. It breaks my heart.
